How to bake apple cake

Hi there. I’m going to show you how to make an apple cake today.

I’m going to show you how to make a very simple apple cake. It’s adorable and tastes amazing. I’ve just got a bakery dish here. I’m going to lightly grease the dish. We’re going to put the grease-proof paper in the dish. That’s it prepared and we’ll put the mix in there in a minute. Let’s put the eggs in first, then the butter. And I’m going to give those a whisk. Then I’m going to put the sugar in. Then I’m going to put the baking powder in, the vanilla extract, and then finally, the flour. Not the tidiest video I’ve ever done. That can come off. That’s the consistency that you’re looking for.

And then finally what I’m going to do is just give this a bit of a mix around with a spatula. And what I’m going to do now is just line the base of the tin with a layer of that cake mix like so and smooth it out. And then in a separate operation, I have some apples. And what I’ve done with these is I’ve just obviously peeled the apple and cut them into quite thick wedges. And I’m going to layer this base and then sprinkle with some sugar at the top. So this is the first layer. And what I’m going to do is cover with mix, and then do a second layer. I’m just going to dust it with a little bit of sugar on top, which will hopefully make it just go nice and brown, caramelized. And that is now going in the oven for 30 minutes on 180 degrees.

Just for presentation, I am going to put some freshly squeezed apple juice into a pan, turn that up, and this is all to do with part of my series on how to make sauces. And the very principles, as you will know if you’ve been watching other videos of sauce making, is if you reduce down a liquid which is very watery, it intensifies in flavor and becomes a lot thicker in consistency. That is what’s happening there and that will form the basis of the sauce, just to make it look pretty.

I’ve taken this out of the oven and the reason I did that is because whenever you bake, you need to let whatever it is rest. I’ve now let that rest for about 15 minutes. I’m now going to turn that upside down, which means you can take off the grease proof paper. Very happy with that. Turn that upside down. What I’ll then do is create a nice little square. We’re going to have a little quenelle of ice cream on it, and I’ll just do a little sauce around the dish. And there you have apple cake. Enjoy.
Well, I hope you enjoyed that.

Next time, I’m going to show you how to cook savoy cabbage with grouse. I look forward to seeing you then.
